Department Profile

Agricultural Biotechnology

Agri Biotechnology is a range of tools including breeding techniques that alter living organism, or part of organism, to make or modify product; improve plants or animals. Biotechnology provides farmers with tools that can make production cheaper and more manageable. For example, some biotechnology crops can be to tolerate specific herbicide, insects or disease, increase the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. Dept of Agri – Biotechnology is comes under division of crop improvement. There are different lab equipments are available to conduct practical class which are Molecular biology related equipments such as centrifuge machine, PCR machine, Agarose gel electrophoresis etc and well developed plant tissue culture explants nursery and laboratory equipped with Air conditioner, mist chamber, Net house etc,.
About course practical activities students learn different types of molecular techniques such as plant DNA isolation and Gel electrophoresis. Electrophoresis is a laboratory technique used to separate DNA, RNA or protein molecules based on their size and electrical charge. During practical classes students are learned about DNA isolation and Gel electrophoresis in different crops such as rice, green gram, cotton and tomato. Molecular size of the DNA of interested sample determines by size of the molecules in a sample, standards of known sizes are separated on the same gel and then compared to the sample.
