Department Profile

Biochemistry

Plant Biochemistry Department established in the year 2017 as a subsidiary subject for B.Sc.,(Hons.) Agriculture students. This department has one Senior Assistant Professor Dr. K.Rajeshwaran, who is currently the Department Head and one laboratory assistant.
The main focus of biochemistry is on understanding how biological molecules give rise to the processes that occur within living cells, which in turn relates greatly to the study and understanding of plant biochemical reactions.
We train students to be familiar with the principles and procedures during the course and develop special aptitude for tackling biochemical problems related to agriculture. Plant Biochemistry is not only an important field of basic science explaining the molecular function of a plant, but is also an applied science that is in the position to contribute to the solution of agricultural problems.
The Department has well equipped laboratory. In this laboratory, students have access to every kind of equipment for the study of biomolecules and to work on potentially applied aspects in the fields of plant Biochemistry with major emphasis in the areas of abiotic stress tolerance, nutritional quality enhancement and assessment in cereals, millets, pulses and secondary metabolites. The department provides a comprehensive and effective training to the students in the application of biochemical skills in the field of Biochemistry for the benefit of mankind.
