A district-level farmers’ training program on organic farming under the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) was successfully organized on 07.01.2025 at Yelagiri, with the objective of equipping farmers with practical knowledge and skills to transition to organic farming methods. The training aimed to address sustainable agricultural practices, improve soil health, and enhance farm productivity without reliance on synthetic chemicals.
Mr. T. Velmurugan, Assistant Director of Agriculture (ADA), delivered the introductory speech and encouraged farmers to adopt organic farming practices to improve soil fertility. Dr. A. Vennila Mary, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Extension), briefed the participants on the benefits of organic farming for soil, crops, and human health. She also explained techniques for composting, vermicomposting, and biofertilizer application, as well as the use of natural pesticides and crop rotation methods to manage pests and weeds sustainably.
Mr. Seeniraj, Joint Director of Agriculture, elaborated on ways to promote sustainable agriculture and enhance farmers’ income. He also issued organic certificates to three groups (each 25 farmers) from Yelagiri.
On behalf of the State Department of Agriculture (Marketing), Mr. Sivakumar (DD) and Mrs. Latha (AO) provided an overview of the steps required to obtain individual organic certification and strategies to market organic produce effectively.More than 60 farmers benefitted from this training program.
